State of the Art on Computational Design of Assemblies with Rigid Parts

An assembly refers to a collection of parts joined together achieve specific form and/or functionality. Designing assemblies is non-trivial task as slight local modification on part's geometry or its joining method could have global impact the structural functional performance whole assembly. Assemblies can be classified structures that transmit force carry loads and mechanisms transfer motion perform mechanical work. In this state-of-the-art report, we focus computational design with rigid parts, which generally formulated geometric modeling optimization problem. We broadly classify existing approaches, mainly from computer graphics community, according high-level objectives, including fabricability, stability, reconfigurability, tileability. Computational analysis various aspects an integral component in these approaches. review different classes methods, discuss their strengths limitations, make connections among them, propose possible directions for future research.
